The origin of greenery: biophilic design

The roots of the current greenery trend lie in biophilic design. Biophilia is an ethical concept that focuses on the human ‘love of life’ (ancient Greek bios = life; philia = love). Based on this, Stephen Kellert defined the idea of biophilic design in the 1990s. He describes this type of interior design and architecture as a holistic approach to creating a connection between our living spaces and nature – especially in urban areas where there are not many green spaces.

The desire to surround oneself with nature has been observed since the dawn of humanity. Since the 1950s, biophilic design approaches have been particularly popular in public spaces such as shopping centres, offices and hotels. Well-known examples of biophilic design include Changi Airport in Singapore and the Treehouse Hotel in London.

Greenery – what makes this style so popular?

The contemporary interpretation of biophilic design is the greenery trend. Ever since Pantone named ‘Greenery’ the colour of the year in 2017, this style has been on everyone's lips. Since then, it has continued to evolve: in addition to the yellow-green typical of Greenery, other shades of green have become absolute trend colours in recent years: muted variations such as sage green, eucalyptus and pistachio appear fresh, spring-like and modern. Those who prefer a darker flair opt for deep greens such as emerald, olive or khaki. These rich green tones appear classy, elegant, timeless and cosy. With their calming, balancing and relaxing effect, shades of green are the perfect colour choice for your interior design. But the greenery trend is also ideal for special occasions: greenery weddings with a natural colour scheme, DIY elements and a relaxed atmosphere are particularly popular with young couples. In this magazine article, you will find more helpful information on the topic of greenery weddings.

Greenery design in restaurants – how to implement the trend

Peace, freshness and relaxation – in cafés, restaurants and hotel rooms, many guests are looking for a break from their hectic everyday lives. That's why the greenery style is also ideal for furnishing premises in the catering and hotel industry.

Greenery: Colours, textures, materials

The aim of the greenery trend is to create a connection between our everyday living environment and nature. We bring nature into the home, creating a sense of well-being for guests and employees alike. Here's how it works:

  • Colours: Green tones naturally play an important role when it comes to colours. Other natural shades – blue, brown, beige, grey – are used to create contrasts or form a calm backdrop for colour accents.
  • Shapes: For the Greenery trend, opt for irregular, organic shapes, for example for decorations or lamps. These shapes are taken directly from nature and look great alongside plants and wood.
  • Materials: Wood is the perfect choice for Greenery-style furniture, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. Buy home textiles – cushions, blankets, curtains, table linen – made from natural materials such as cotton or linen. Add accents of stone and clay to create additional visual interest.
  • Lighting: One big advantage of plants is that they make even dark rooms appear brighter. Take advantage of this and also use mirrors to reflect natural light or light sources such as table or floor lamps to provide brightness.
  • Decoration: Pictures and decorative items that depict natural scenes or are inspired by nature are a perfect match for the greenery style. And the most important decoration for greenery is, of course, plants.
Collage of decorative tips with plants

Plants, plants, plants Plants are the decorative focus of the greenery trend. The rule here is: the more, the better! Greenery thrives on variety and quantity. Combine different types of plants, flowers and blossoms to create an authentic look. This also leads to the most important don't: don't scatter plants around the room individually. They will look lost and you won't get that typical greenery feeling. If you only have space for a few individual houseplants, it's better to choose a different decorative style.

Plants for restaurants

Are you thinking about furnishing and decorating your restaurant, café or hotel in a greenery style with a variety of plants? Here are a few points to keep in mind:

Various impressions of the Greenery trend

Sufficient space for your plants

Since lush planting is very important for the Greenery trend, you should ensure that you have sufficient space available. Use as many plants as possible to create the typical Greenery atmosphere. In smaller rooms, however, the greenery should be arranged in such a way that the rooms do not appear even smaller. Nevertheless, greenery still creates a cosy atmosphere here. Large, spacious rooms, on the other hand, are perfect for greenery highlights in corners or on columns. If the ceiling is high enough, greening the ceiling is also an exciting decorative idea.

Even though lots of plants look great, your decorations should not get in the way of your guests or service staff during everyday life. Make sure to keep aisles clear to allow easy access to the kitchen and tables. You should also plan carefully where to place plants on tables and around seating areas so that your guests are not hindered by leaves and branches when standing up, eating and drinking.

Suitable lighting conditions

Green plants make rooms appear brighter. The greenery concept is therefore also suitable for premises with dark furniture, bars in basement vaults or hotels with very large rooms and few windows. However, greenery looks particularly good in bright rooms – but only if the plants do not block out the daylight. Large plants should therefore not be placed in front of small windows. For this reason, plants that do not require much light and can therefore be placed in darker corners or against walls are generally best suited to the greenery trend.

Greenery restaurant: caring for plants

The greenery trend is only an option for your business if you and your staff can cope with the work involved in caring for the plants. Even if you choose undemanding plant species, they still need to be watered occasionally. You should also remove brown leaves or dust the plants if necessary. Therefore, make sure you allow enough time and staff to care for your plants.

Our tip:

Place large flower pots on a plant roller so that the plants can be easily moved if necessary. However, make sure that no guest can slip on the plant roller.

Suitable plants for restaurants – list

Depending on the conditions in your dining areas and what you want to achieve with your greenery, there are various plants that are best suited to your needs. Discover the perfect plants for your restaurant.

Particularly undemanding plants

Do you have limited capacity to care for the plants in your restaurant? These plants are very robust, rarely need watering and also grow in places with little light:

  • Schefflera
  • Succulents & cacti
  • Ornamental grasses

Plants for air purification

Bars or restaurants in cellar vaults are often difficult to ventilate. This is where the greenery concept can have a positive side effect: plants release oxygen into their surroundings and filter harmful substances and unpleasant odours from the air. According to studies by the American aerospace agency NASA, plants in combination with good ventilation improve the indoor climate in space, as they not only convert CO2 into oxygen, but also absorb pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde and other solvents. Even though these chemicals should not be present in the air in restaurants and bars, the purifying properties of plants also work on food or cigarette odours, fresh paint or new furniture that emits glue and paint fumes. These plants are particularly effective at purifying the air:

  • Snake plant
  • Spider plant

Plants for humidifying the air

Dry, dusty air irritates the respiratory tracts of your guests and employees. Greenery decoration offers you a natural alternative to electric humidifiers. Sufficiently humid air reduces the amount of dust particles floating in the air, as the moisture makes them heavier and causes them to sink to the floor – along with any pathogens, pollen and pollutants that adhere to the dust particles. Green plants generally always release moisture into their surroundings. This positive characteristic increases with the greater the water requirement and leaf volume of the respective plant. Particularly suitable for air humidification are:

  • Snake plant
  • Indoor lime tree

Sound insulation with plants

In large, busy dining areas, noise levels can become very high. The clattering of crockery, the clinking of glasses and the conversations of guests can be muffled by large plants, shrubs and ornamental trees, creating a pleasant atmosphere even when the restaurant is busy. Plants with large leaves provide both sound insulation and air humidification. Fast-growing climbing plants or those with large leaves are particularly good at dampening sound. These include:

  • Pothos

  • Aralia

  • Weeping fig

    Our tip:
The greenery trend thrives on vibrant greenery. However, to reduce the amount of care required, it may be a good idea to supplement your real plants with a few artificial ones. Make sure you invest in high-quality artificial plants, though. These look deceptively real and therefore fit in well with the greenery concept.
